Prevention and safety
Every year, thousands of pupils swap their school desks for a day in the workplace on YOUCA Action Day. To ensure that both the young people and the employers look back on this day with a positive feeling, it is essential to create a safe and supportive working environment.
Although not every job involves high-risk working conditions, YOUCA provides employers with the necessary guidelines and tools to ensure a safe and educational day. With the right support, trainees can carry out their tasks with confidence, a sense of responsibility and within their capabilities.
What can you do as an employer?
1. Comply with the law
First and foremost, ensure that you take into account the legal requirements applicable to your sector.
2. Take the apprentice’s skills into account
Check the young person’s background: what course are they studying and what experience do they have? Ensure that the tasks are suited to the apprentice’s knowledge and skills. For example, do not take on an apprentice with no welding experience as a ‘welder for a day’.
3. Be clear about the requirements
State in the job board whether specific skills are required to carry out the job safely.
In the comments field, specify what clothing or protective equipment the apprentice needs. If special workwear is required, ensure it is available and find out the apprentice’s correct size in good time (e.g. shoe or clothing size).
4. Instructions and guidance
At the start of the working day, explain how the equipment should be used correctly and what protective clothing is required.
Discuss the specific risks associated with the job or working environment and explain the relevant safety measures.
Check that the young person is following the safety measures. If the student takes irresponsible risks, and you have intervened on several occasions, you may send the student back to school if no other tasks are available. You can then inform the teacher via the ‘student absent’ button in the job bank.

Stay safe and insured during the YOUCA Action Day!
On 16 October, pupils will be spending a day shadowing staff at your workplace. They are covered by insurance in two ways:
- Through the school insurance policy: The YOUCA Action Day is an off-campus activity, so the school insurance automatically applies. In the event of a labour inspection, your registration on the job bank is sufficient.
- Through YOUCA’s additional insurance: YOUCA takes out supplementary insurance to cover damage to equipment entrusted to the pupils. This insurance is provided byIC Verzekeringen & Adesio Assurances.
