Sustainable food
In 2022, YOUCA supported the mission of Rikolto, an organisation developing methods to work with young people to feed our growing global population in a sustainable way. YOUCA specifically supported the projects in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), Mbale (Uganda) and Quito (Ecuador).
The challenge
Sustainable food production and consumption is desperately needed, as the food on our plates is responsible for up to 37% of greenhouse gas emissions, contributing significantly to the climate crisis. In addition, the effects of climate change, such as prolonged droughts and floods caused by heavy rainfall, increasingly lead to crop failures. This not only leaves people with less food available, but also puts the farmers who produce our food at risk of losing their income. These impacts are felt most severely in countries in the Global South. This while they have just contributed the least to the climate crisis compared to the Global North.
A sustainable food system where food production is less of a burden on the climate and methods are more resilient to the effects of climate change is desperately needed. YOUCA and Rikolto believe in the power and enormous potential of young people to initiate these positive changes. However, in many places in the Global South, they encounter a lot of socio-economic challenges such as unemployment, poverty and lack of education. Rikolto is therefore committed to training these young people to become agricultural entrepreneurs, giving them the tools to contribute to a more sustainable food system with innovative solutions.
The approach
Together with local partner organisations, Rikolto builds Generation Food Incubators in various cities around the world. YOUCA specifically supports the projects in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), Mbale (Uganda) and Quito (Ecuador). Young people who dream of starting their own food business or are already building a small business are brought together with experts in a stimulating environment where they have the opportunity to further develop relevant social skills, such as leadership and cooperation.
Guidance
The young people also receive guidance on how to build a successful business. This takes the form of a two-day hackaton where young people share and further develop new ideas, and a six-month training programme that includes company visits, master classes and lessons in business management. This is followed by a year of incubation where Rikolto supports them in building a customer base and they further develop their skills with the help of experience coaches. Eventually, the 15 young people with the best business plans will receive funding to make their venture a further success.
In addition to Rikolto's project, YOUCA youngsters chose several other small-scale youth projects centred on sustainable food. These were CHanGE and WeDecolonizeVUB by the University Centre for Development Cooperation, Le Champ des Possibles by Le Champ du Chaudron and The Moes-Garden by Freinet school De Speelplaneet.
Educational material
To deepen and make the YOUCA Action Day live broadly at school, we developed, together with Rikolto, a curriculum around sustainable food and the project countries. The lessons are suitable for different subjects, making the YOUCA Action Day a school-wide concept.
